Mouting Systems – what to consider?

Without suitable mounting systems, it is impossible to install solar power systems on roofs, balconies or even open-air surfaces. They ensure safety and stability, and also allow aesthetic integration of the PV system on the roof of the home, commercial building and other surfaces.

For this purpose, various manufacturers such as K2 Systems or SL Rack offer complete mounting systems with components such as roof hooks, module support rails and mounting feet, module clamps, elevations as well as bolts and nuts and other mounting accessories.

Mounting on pitched roofs / on a gable roof

On typical gable roofs of homes, a system of roof hooks and module support profiles is usually used to securely and reliably mount the PV modules on the tiled roof. To mount the PV system, the roof tiles must first be removed so that the roof hooks, which are usually U-shaped, can be attached under the tiles or screwed to the rafters.

Mounting on flat roofs

When mounting on flat roofs, ballast systems (with weights), roof elevations or, more rarely, roof hooks are usually used. In the case of roof elevations, the PV modules are aligned at an angle using mounting triangles.

Mounting systems for mini PV systems

For the uncomplicated mounting of PV modules on flat roofs or in gardens and other flat surfaces, the manufacturer WATTSTONE has developed the innovative L-bricks in different inclination variants (6 degrees, 10 degrees) with already integrated M8 threads. The system allows PV modules to be assembled into a balcony power plant, for example, without the need for special tools and with little installation effort.

Alignment of PV systems

South orientation
With a south orientation of the PV system, the solar panels are exposed to solar radiation during the sun-intensive hours around midday, which means that the system is more likely to operate at peak power and can result in a higher yield. However, it should be noted that due to a southern orientation, there is little or no solar radiation on the modules during the morning and evening hours. This means that the solar power is only available for self-consumption at certain times if the PV system is not operated in combination with an battery storage system.

East-West orientation
With an east-west combination of the system, the yield period can be greater overall compared to a south orientation, since the solar modules can also be exposed to solar radiation in the morning and evening hours. Here too, however, it is not possible to make a generalized statement, as other factors such as the roof pitch or the location can have a significant influence on the output. Covering both sides of the roof with solar modules is also associated with higher initial costs. With an east-west orientation, it is more difficult to achieve the peak output of the system, since the entire PV system may not be illuminated by the sun during the sun-intensive midday period. If only one compass direction (east or west) is to be covered, there is no basic recommendation. The deviations between east and west are in fact only slight, so that both sides produce approximately the same yield over the course of the year.
