SMA Storage M Battery Storage 28.7 kWh – Storage M 28.7
Modular high-voltage home storage system with 28.7 kWh lithium iron phosphate capacity – plug and play, flexibly expandable up to 49.1 kWh, for residential and small commercial photovoltaic systems.
The SMA Storage M 28.7 is a modular PV storage system, i.e. high-voltage battery storage system for home users and small commercial applications based on proven lithium iron phosphate technology – ideal for storing solar energy and maximising self-consumption. With 7 battery modules of 4.09 kWh each and a usable capacity of 28.7 kWh, this is the largest configuration still compatible with the SMA Sunny Boy Smart Energy. For larger configurations from 32.8 kWh (8 modules) onwards, only the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X is compatible. The central BMS manages all battery modules together. The stackable design without internal cable connections enables quick plug and play commissioning as well as straightforward expansion within two years. Thanks to IP66 and an operating temperature range of -20°C to +50°C, the system is suitable for both indoor and outdoor installation.
Scope of Delivery
- 1× SMA Storage M BMS Unit (STM-BMS-10)
- 7× SMA Storage M Battery Module (4.09 kWh each)
Features
- Designed for dynamic tariffs: LFP technology for frequent charge and discharge cycles – up to 7.2 MWh/kWh guaranteed energy throughput, suitable for dynamic electricity tariffs, energy trading and VPP scenarios (virtual power plants).
- Plug and Play installation: Stackable modules without internal wiring – automatic commissioning, SOC/state of charge display via LED.
- Central BMS: One BMS unit manages all battery modules – simpler system architecture and more efficient battery management compared to module-internal BMS solutions.
- High charge/discharge current: Up to 50 A in combination with the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X, 30 A with the Sunny Boy Smart Energy.
- Maximum configuration for Sunny Boy Smart Energy: 28.7 kWh is the largest expansion stage compatible with the Sunny Boy Smart Energy – for more capacity the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X is required.
- Flexibly expandable: Expandable within two years to up to 49.1 kWh (12 modules) by adding further battery modules (from 8 modules onwards only with Sunny Tripower Hybrid X).
- Indoor and outdoor use: IP66, temperature range -20°C to +50°C – compact design for virtually any installation location.
- 10-year warranty: Upon registration within 30 days of commissioning via my.sma-service.com.
Expansion and Scaling
The SMA Storage M 28.7 can be expanded within two years with additional SMA Storage M battery modules up to 49.1 kWh (12 modules) – from 8 modules (32.8 kWh) onwards, only the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 20–30 kW is compatible. With the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 5–15 kW, up to 9 modules (36.9 kWh) are possible; with the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X 20–30 kW, up to 12 modules (49.1 kWh).
SMA Storage M vs. SMA Home Storage
Both SMA battery storage systems use proven LFP technology and are compatible with SMA hybrid inverters – but there are key differences: the SMA Storage M is significantly more scalable (up to 49.1 kWh vs. max. 16.4 kWh for the Home Storage) and features a central BMS for all modules. In combination with the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X, the Storage M enables a higher charge/discharge current of 50 A compared to 36 A for the Home Storage. The Storage M is designed for the Sunny Tripower Hybrid X and the Sunny Boy Smart Energy – those with an existing system using the Sunny Tripower Smart Energy should continue to use the SMA Home Storage.
