Power optimizer for photovoltaics

Power optimizers - maximum yield from solar modules in demanding environments

.

Power optimizers for PV systems are particularly worthwhile in situations with partial shading, different orientations (inclinations) or module types. The task of a power optimizer is to maximize energy yields by controlling the current flow of each solar panel individually. This increases the efficiency of the installation and boosts profitability - especially in demanding environments.

PV Power Optimizer – what to consider?

Partial shading can affect the performance of a solar system. Since the solar modules on homes are usually connected in series, the performance of the entire system is always aligned with the weakest module, thus generating so-called "mismatching losses". This is exactly where power optimizers come in.

What is the function of power optimizers in a PV system?

A power optimizer (also called solar module optimizer) is used in photovoltaic systems to maximize the power generation of solar panels. The device does this by monitoring and optimizing the current flow in each solar module, which can reduce mismatching losses. This improves the overall performance of the solar system and allows for better utilization in partial shading or other adverse site conditions. Power optimizers are attached to each module and determine and optimize the individual Maximum Power Point (called MPP) at each module, i.e. the point at which the module generates the maximum power.

When does the use of power optimizers make sense?

If there is only occasional shading of individual modules for a short time (e.g. early in the morning after sunrise), there is initially no cause for concern. If the situation is mostly comparable for all modules on normal days, the positive contribution of a power optimizer is rather small. If, on the other hand, there is regular shading from objects that cast shadows (e.g. from trees or chimneys), the output of a module and, in total, the output of the entire system will be reduced if no output optimizer is used. The same applies if you use different module types. Depending on your individual circumstances, the installation of power optimizers may therefore be worthwhile.
