Charging Stations for E-Cars – what to consider?

The combination of a PV system with a wallbox has many advantages. On the one hand, the e-car can be charged 100% with self-generated green electricity, which is also free of charge compared to grid electricity. You are therefore making an active contribution to environmental protection. At the same time, you as a consumer become less dependent on the public infrastructure if you charge your e-car predominantly with your own solar power. The ideal combination can be achieved here with the use of an electricity storage unit, which also makes you independent of time.

Is it possible to fully charge the e-car with solar power?

Depending on the size of the PV system at home, it is certainly possible to fully charge the electric vehicle with solar power. This is because drivers in Germany cover an average of around 15,000 km per year, which corresponds to around 2,250 kWh required annually for an e-car. If you operate a PV system with an output of 10 kWp on your roof, it will theoretically supply around 10,000 kWh of electricity per year under optimal conditions. Of course, this is only an estimate, since the maximum power is influenced by various factors. However, without an existing solar power storage system, you are forced to always perform the charging process during the day, which makes it difficult to fully charge.

Which wallbox is suitable for my PV system?

In principle, you can operate any wallbox with electricity from a PV system. However, to ensure that when solar power is available, it is also used for targeted charging, you should make sure that your chosen wallbox has a solar charging function (PV surplus charging). In our shop, we offer wallboxes that are suitable for combination with photovoltaic systems, such as the charging stations SMA EV Charger, Fornius Wattpilot, Kostal Enector, Huawei FusionCharge and SolarEdge Home EV Charger.

Wallbox equipment

Charging power:
The charging power or capability of a wallbox is a key feature. It is measured in kilowatts (kW) and indicates how fast the wallbox can charge your electric vehicle. Wallboxes can have charging capacities ranging from 3 kW to 22 kW or more. A higher charging power means shorter charging times, but not all electric vehicles can use the maximum charging power. So you should make sure that the wallbox's charging power is compatible with your electric vehicle's needs.

Connections and plugs:
Most wallboxes are equipped with different types of plugs to charge different electric vehicles. Typical plug types are type 2 (Mennekes) and type 1. Make sure the wallbox has the correct plug type for your electric vehicle. Additionally, pay attention to the number of outlets if you want to charge multiple electric vehicles.

Connectivity and control options:
Modern wallboxes often offer connectivity options that allow you to control and monitor the wallbox via a smartphone app or the Internet. These features can schedule charging, monitor energy usage, and set access restrictions. The availability and type of connectivity options can vary significantly between different wallboxes.

Are there subsidy opportunities for the purchase of wallboxes?

Before purchasing a wallbox, it makes sense to check for funding opportunities, as these devices are often subsidized by the federal government, the states or even municipalities in conjunction with other PV components. The government funding for 2023 has already been exhausted, but in 2024 there will be further subsidies amounting to 200 million euros. KfW would like to provide information about this when the time comes.
