Monitoring systems for photovoltaics are technical devices that collect and provide operating data of a PV plant. These systems process the data received in readable or visual form and generate error messages if something is not running smoothly during operation.
For normal operators of a PV system, it is often sufficient to read the display of the inverter. If the monitoring options are to be expanded, intelligent devices such as smart meters and home managers as well as data loggers and other devices are often used for monitoring. However, continuous monitoring is recommended for both small and large systems.
What is the function of a Smart Meter?
A smart meter is an intelligent digital meter that records energy consumption in real time and transmits it wirelessly to energy suppliers. The smart meter thus enables more efficient billing as well as better monitoring of energy consumption. The devices offer consumers the opportunity to keep an eye on their energy consumption and optimize it as needed.
The installation of a smart meter is optional for normal consumers below 6,000 kWh per year or with smaller generation plants of 1 - 7 kWh of installed capacity. From 2025, consumers can request a smart electricity meter from the metering point operator.
Smart meter models from the manufacturer of the inverter already in use are often used to enable the best possible connection to the energy management integrated in the inverter. However, the use of devices from other manufacturers is also possible. Popular devices here include the SMA Sunny Home Manager, SMA Energy Meter, Kostal Smart Energy Meter, Fronius Smart Meter TS 65A-3 and others.
What is the function of a DataLogger?
A DataLogger collects, stores and analyzes data on the performance and operation of the solar system. It records information such as power generation, voltage, temperature, and other relevant parameters, enabling real-time, targeted monitoring of the system, problem identification, performance analysis, and long-term yield evaluation. It immediately notifies you automatically when faults occur. A DataLogger can help you optimize the efficiency of your PV systems, identify maintenance needs early and increase the overall yield of the system.
A data logger is most useful when the data is sent to the manufacturer's portal and processed there. An Internet connection is required for this. Depending on the manufacturer, the data can be retrieved via the web interface or an app.
